Spring 2019 Elementary Math Circle Program Details

SF State’s Elementary Math Circle is an alternative math enrichment program designed to develop a positive attitude towards mathematics by introducing young children to elements of mathematical culture. We carefully select and train mathematicians who have the capacity to gracefully and compassionately share their enthusiasm for mathematics with children. Our instructors lead engaging mathematical activities on topics chosen from higher mathematics including number theory, game theory, combinatorics, probability and statistics, abstract algebra and topology. To learn more, please view our video.

Class Levels

As in all our programs, adjustments are made to meet the particular needs of each group and to ensure a fun, engaging and mathematically rich experience for all. We offer 2nd-3rd grade circles and 4th-6th grade circles. The mathematical content is very different from school math and is equally new and stimulating for all students. Please make sure to only sign students up for one class per week.

This year we are excited to offer a session available for first graders - Thursdays 4:15 to 5:15! To ensure fair and reasonable classroom dynamics, this session will be available for FIRST and SECOND GRADE students ONLY.

Class Calendar

We hope that all prospective students will be able to find a class that works for them and their families! SFMC’s Elementary program at SFSU meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students in each grade level have four options for class times: Tuesday 4:15-5:15, Tuesday 5:30-6:30, Thursday 4:15-5:15, and Thursday 5:30-6:30.

The program will run eight weeks, starting in January and ending in March. A second eight week term will be offered for April through May, with priority registrations for current families, going live in March.

1/31, 2/7, 2/14, 2/21, 2/28, 3/7, 3/14, 3/21

All dates and times are tentative and subject to change.

Cost & Scholarships

SFMC Elementary is a fee-based program.  The cost is $240 per student per session (this covers eight weeks of instruction).  Additionally, we have a generous sliding scale to ensure that all families who are interested in Math Circle can afford to attend.

Reduced Tuition & Fee Waivers

SFMC hopes to accommodate as many students as possible. Families undergoing financial hardship may apply for a free or reduced tuition. To do so, please register on Activity Hero for the session labeled "Reduced Tuition Application" and you will be contacted with a brief questionnaire. Upon review and approval, your child will then be added to the appropriate session.

Location & Parking

SFSU is located at 1600 Holloway Avenue. The nearest official parking garage that you can use is Parking Garage 20 at SFSU.  You can also park on Holloway Avenue or Buckingham Way.

We will be meeting in a new location - Trailer P at the Center for Science and Math Education. These new classrooms are designed to better facilitate small group work and feature much less foot traffic from the SFSU regularly scheduled class. These rooms are much easier for dropoff and pickup, being a quick walk away from the campus parking garage!
